1.6 Natural Hazard Connections
Laura J. Brown
This brief final section pulls together information from the previous sections of this introductory chapter and maps out the connections between natural hazards. This flow chart illustrates these connections and relationships between natural processes that become natural hazards when they threaten human environments. For example, we’ve already talked a bit about how plate tectonics generates both volcanoes and earthquakes, and these connections are shown in this chart. Additionally, the links between earthquakes and tsunamis and mass movement are also illustrated. This flow chart simplifies all these connections and relationships. By the end of this textbook, you’ll likely be able to draw in more links between hazards on your own. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves; the natural hazards covered in the remaining chapters of this textbook are highlighted in this flow chart.
