Team Reflection
This innovation tackles an increasingly important issue in our world today, the lack of sustainability and eco-friendly products. This story discusses the process of creating Royal Scent, the type of consumer that was at the heart of this innovation, and the inspiration to create something positive for our planet. Some points that stood out from the interview were how the innovation came about, the motivation/inspiration, and the company’s mission and purpose.
In the interview, CEO Viki Amoyal said “Our innovation was all about transforming our products to be hypoallergenic, eco-friendly, environmentally friendly, and ozone-friendly” which highlights the company’s target audience and emphasizes the importance Royal Scent places on the environment. Amoyal also continued to speak on how the line is designed to be safe for sensitive skin and pet friendly while reducing their ecological footprint in addition to upholding high air quality standards. This approach demonstrates the company’s business motto which is to care for their customers’ health and environmental health. In a time of consumers becoming increasingly health conscious it is important we see companies evolving with us, like Royal Scent is. The motivation and inspiration behind this approach is also refreshing. Again as stated in the interview “It all started from our desire to meet the needs of today’s consumers”, said Amoyal. Then, they proceeded to discuss how they were motivated to uphold a higher safety standard and with more concern for the environment, which is what Royal Scent did when they made their vision a reality. This was all inspiring to see how a company was successful in what they set out to do, especially when it creates a positive experience for everyone, and continues to do so.
Finally, Amoyal spoke about the company’s mission which encapsulated everything that had previously been spoken about. Royal Scents’ mission is “to bring a better and greener scent experience, creating fragrances that not only attract good vibes and feed your senses but also enhance your mood and make every moment one of freshness”, which they have been successful doing and are continuously improving on. This innovation was great to learn about and it is refreshing to see a company care so much about their consumers best interest as well as the environment. Royal Scent set out to make a positive difference in our world and are successfully doing that.
This ultimately reinforced the concepts that we have been practicing for the past couple of weeks in our classes. The focuses on SDG’s and the accountability the company seeks to amend in the way they produce these products is apparent. This ties back to our academic knowledge because it is a huge part of our learning curriculum and what we have been discussing in our individual classes. Royal Scent is a great example of how contemporary businesses are shifting from what they previously practiced to what they do now. For example Royal Scent closely aligns with the triple bottom line approach which is a more modern outlook on business. This approach assesses a companies success not only on financial factors but also for what it can do socially and environmentally. It also recognizes the importance of long-term stability in their operations.
From an academic perspective Royal Scent’s innovation speaks directly to a lot of the concepts we learned in class. Sustainability and accountability are main focuses in many business classes. Their focus on environmentally friendly non toxic scents provide examples on how a company can contribute in the development of more environmentally friendly practices. This approach of corporate social responsibility is a topic widely discussed in management studies. By addressing consumers’ increasing demand for more environmental practices it allows them to also increase their market demographic and allows for the company to reach more and more people. This overall reinforced what we have been learning in class. It also raised some concerns about the practices of other companies and what type of harmful chemicals we have been using unknowingly when putting on scents on ourselves or in our homes.
One challenge I initially thought of was that it may prove to be challenging being able to find a way to be profitable while also being environmentally and socially responsible. This thought was soon shut down by the way they talked about their customer base. Many consumers are now opting for more environmentally friendly products. While their demand for eco-friendly products increases, Royal Scent is there to meet that criteria and provide them with a good smelling fragrance that fits their beliefs. I was pleasantly surprised at their level of commitment and passion they had for their product and the opinions of their customers.
In exploring the AIM2Flourish story of Royal Scent, our group found that this exercise not only expanded our understanding of sustainable business practices but also clarified the real world impacts of social entrepreneurship. Seeing how Royal Scent experately combines eco-friendly and hypoallergenic product offerings with a commitment to social responsibility has inspired us to think critically about our own future business practices. This exercise emphasized the importance of prioritizing consumer needs alongside environmental health, which we believe will influence how we, as future business professionals, conduct innovation and product development.
As a group, we discussed how Viki’s commitment to sustainability and inclusivity shaped Royal Scent’s growth and reputation, leading us to consider how similar values could be applied to our own potential ventures. The company’s approach to both market needs and environmental responsibility made us realize that a strong commitment to social and environmental goals is not just admirable, it can be essential to long-term success. Moving forward, we collectively agreed that we would aim to incorporate principles of sustainability and ethical responsibility into our own business decisions, recognizing that doing so can create value not only for the business but for the broader community as well.
Overall, Royal Scents story highlighted for us that meaningful business innovations go beyond profit and can serve as powerful factors for change. As we see ourselves as future business leaders, we can see a clear connection between the values explored in this exercise and our goals for creating companies that prioritize both financial success and positive impact on the world.
This cross-cultural experience allowed us to apply our coursework to a real-world project. Through our Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) lectures, we could identify the best strategies to align with our project’s objectives. We gained insight into the complexity of entering a sustainable field, recognizing that while sustainability initiatives may be challenging and resource-intensive in the short term, they often offer significant growth potential in the long run.
Our coursework provided a solid foundation of resources and information. We frequently referenced our notes and lectures to guide project development and decision-making. This shared knowledge base helped us create a more comprehensive and overall more informative project.
We organized tasks during video meetings, using Google Docs and email to distribute and track assignments. Each team member selected tasks based on their interests, making it easier to coordinate and complete the work. While we faced occasional communication issues, such as trouble locating shared documents or joining calls, the structure we set up generally allowed for smooth collaboration.
Our WhatsApp group chat for video calls worked well, allowing us to communicate quickly and easily without the need for additional platforms. Instructions were clear, so our meetings were efficient, and we could quickly allocate tasks. However, time zone differences proved challenging, leading to some team members being unable to join all meetings. Additionally, some team members experienced connectivity issues or scheduling conflicts, which occasionally disrupted communication.
Individual Reflections
Daniel Gonzalez—As a member of the virtual team, I found this experience to be very different from any I have had. I thought it was very interesting being able to work with others around the world. However, I also thought that completing the tasks in a timely manner was a bit difficult since everyone came from different time zones. Coordinating meetings and splitting up the work was very difficult because we never really knew if each person would do their part. Everyone also had things going on in their personal life that being work, school, or social life it proved difficult to set up a single meeting with certain group members. Ultimately this assignment shined a light that it seems to be very difficult to coordinate with members who do not have time to complete the work or join the meetings. It created opportunities, however, to be able to find ways to circumvent these issues and be able to finish the assignments before the due dates.
Gillian Marshall- This project was quite challenging. I usually find group work in itself already a challenge however, adding in international group members, in different time zones, and not being able to meet in person made it much more difficult. Additionally, coordinating group meetings and executing work projects became increasingly difficult when two of our group members stopped participating. This was frustrating and time consuming trying to get them to engage or participate and ultimately unsuccessful. This also caused some work to be done last minute as they would not complete assigned projects nor would they communicate if they were unable to complete them on time. Luckily the other four members in our group were consistently engaged and willing to find time to meet, communicate group expectations, and complete group work in a timely manner. Another positive was the process of learning more about some small businesses in our community and how they are committed to working towards a better tomorrow by aligning with the UN’s SDGs. Overall I did appreciate this project, it was a learning experience and not something I’d otherwise get exposure to do.
Yevhen Okhvat- Overall this project was difficult and time consuming, it was hard to find time to manage video calls with my team while focusing on other classes and work. But it was very pleasant meeting some of the team members. Overall the biggest issues were trying to make time zones work, we all had to sacrifice time to make the meetings happen but 2 members seemed to never be able join and always have issues. Which made it unfair for the rest of us making time to join. Overall this project was very interesting and it was cool meeting with other people from around the globe, I think the premise and main idea of the project is amazing, it was a pleasure to work with these people.
Mahinul Prottoy- This project was very challenging as we all are in different timezone specially for us because the time gap was huge. Most importantly we couldn’t attend most of the meeting properly which made the project difficult for us. And some of the members didn’t share the necessary documents in time so finishing the project before deadline was tough but we tried to discuss the issues in meeting and finally we have done the project. And the company they chose was tough enough to get the info online and also no one shared the interview so it took so much time to finish it. But it was a new experience overall which will help us to handle this types of situation in future projects.
Nithusan Sivanesan – In our COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) project,we focused on Royal Scent, a brand distinguished by its eco-friendly fragrance innovations in Toronto, Ontario. This company’s commitment to hypoallergenic, pet-safe, and sustainable products aligns with Toronto’s values of environmental responsibility and positions it as a leader in green consumer products. This focus on sustainability and environmental consciousness has not only secured Royal Scent’s place in the Toronto market but also suggests its potential for growth across Canada, where eco-friendly values are highly prioritized. As an international student at the University of Wales, participating in this project has been an enriching learning experience. Despite being unable to join one of our WhatsApp meetings due to scheduling conflicts, I remained actively engaged by reviewing the materials shared by my teammates. My group consists of six members, each bringing unique perspectives that have shaped our research and interview approach. The diversity within the group has made collaboration dynamic and insightful, especially in analyzing how Royal Scent’s eco-friendly approach resonates with both Toronto’s community values and Canada’s broader focus on sustainability.Reflecting on this experience, I recognize the importance of adaptability and open communication in group projects, particularly in virtual, multicultural settings. Although missing the WhatsApp meeting was a challenge, it taught me to rely on shared resources and follow up proactively. This experience has shown me the importance of time management, proactive engagement, and understanding diverse perspectives in a global project context
Nathaniel Amoyal-Floyd- Being a part of this experiential project was both educational and difficult, particularly because we collaborated with people from different time zones in a virtual, cross-cultural team. Finding meeting times that worked for everyone was difficult at first, so scheduling was difficult. I quickly learned that being flexible and proactive in communication was essential for our success. To manage time differences, I often had to adjust my availability to align with others, sometimes taking calls earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon to ensure that everyone could attend. This challenge actually improved my time-management skills and taught me the value of preparation. With tasks distributed across various time zones, I made it a priority to clearly outline and communicate expectations so that each team member could work independently without waiting on updates or approvals from other group members. By doing this, I aimed to make our collaboration smoother and ensure that progress continued even when some of us were not present throughout our meetings. Overcoming these real-world challenges improved my leadership style as well. I grew more understanding and patient after realizing that everyone needed to be more understanding of one another’s responsibilities due to time zone differences. Additionally, I became more appreciative of the work that each team member did to accommodate our schedules, which strengthened the group’s sense of unity. I now have a greater understanding of the flexibility and preparation required for productive international teamwork, skills that will undoubtedly be essential in my future careers.
