The profession of engineering is vast and complex, covering many fields and specialties. To be a professional engineer, one must have a solid foundation on both technical and non-technical skills, including mathematical skills, communication skills, knowledge of ethics, knowledge of best practices, and knowledge of design methodologies. The acquisition of these skills and more may seem like a daunting task, and as such, basic introductory material covering a wide range of engineering knowledge can be helpful to students starting out on their engineering journey.

This Pressbooks intended to serve as a resource to support the introduction of students to to Engineering and Design in Canada. Much of this information was compiled based on course material from the School of Engineering Course ENGG*1100 – Engineering and Design I, sources found on the internet, and the book Introduction to Professional Engineering in Canada, Fifth Canadian Edition (Andrews et.al. 2019).
